# Candidate Eligibility Settings

> Set universal eligibility rules that decide who qualifies for study invitations.

Candidate eligibility rules let Admins set universal criteria that determine who qualifies for study invitations. Eligibility rules help you maintain research quality and avoid over-recruiting the same people, and they apply automatically across every study in your account.

<Note>
  Any account member can view eligibility settings. Only **Admins** can create, edit, or delete rules.
</Note>

## The five default rules

Every account comes with five default eligibility rules:

* **Study invitation limit** — flags candidates who've received more than **2 invitations in a rolling month**.
* **Invite responsiveness** — flags candidates whose response rate falls below **50% over a rolling 6 months**.
* **Study participation limit** — flags candidates with a participation rate above **20%**.
* **Interview no-show limit** — flags a candidate after **any single no-show**, with no expiration. This is the strictest default rule.
* **Candidate consent** — flags candidates who have explicitly opted out.

These rules work together to reduce repeat invitations to unresponsive participants, maintain consent compliance, and improve show-up rates. Each threshold is adjustable.

## Where to find eligibility settings

Go to **Account Settings → Governance → [Candidate Eligibility](https://greatquestion.co/governance/eligibility)**.

## Creating a rule

1. Click **+ Create rule**.
2. Enter a **title** and a **description**.
3. Add the **criteria** that define which candidates are ineligible.
4. Add a short **label** to display in the Eligibility column.
5. Save.

<Note>
  You can have a maximum of **6 rules** in total, including the five defaults.
</Note>

## Managing rules

From the Candidate Eligibility page, Admins can:

* **Edit** a rule using the pencil icon.
* **Delete** a rule using the trash can icon.

Changes apply immediately across all studies, and candidate eligibility updates in real time.

## Seeing why a candidate is affected

Candidates who match a rule are marked as the label that is set or if they are impacted by more than one rule, they will be marked as **Ineligible**. To see exactly which rules are affecting someone, hover over the eligibility label on the **Candidates** page or within a study's **Participants** tab.

<Tip>
  When more than one rule applies to a candidate, the system automatically marks them as **Ineligible**.

## Troubleshooting

| ------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| A candidate was flagged after one missed session | The no-show rule flags candidates by default after a single no-show, with no time limit | This is expected with the default rule. Adjust the threshold if needed. |
| I can't create or edit a rule | Only Admins can create, edit, or delete eligibility rules, and custom rules require an Enterprise plan | Confirm your role, or contact your admin for more assistance. |
