# Insights

> Learn what Insights are, when to use them, and how to create and share them with your team.

Insights are **collaborative documents** where you compile research findings and connect supporting artifacts, such as recordings, highlights, reels, survey results, and tags. They're a manual destination for your research synthesis: a place to pull grouped highlights or synthesis findings into, summarize takeaways, and share them with your organization.

Use Insights to combine and interpret multiple data sources, create structured and shareable summaries of your research, collaborate with teammates on analysis, and embed relevant artifacts directly in the narrative for context.

<Tip>
  Think of Insights as your research storytelling space, a living document for communicating what you've learned.
</Tip>

Researchers use Insights to consolidate study outcomes and highlight key learnings. Designers and PMs use them to visualize findings from interviews and usability tests. Executives read summarized outcomes for faster decision-making, and ReOps leads maintain a repository of past research for knowledge sharing.

## Create an Insight

There's more than one way to create an Insight.

**From the Repository:**

1. Click **Repository** in the left-hand menu.
2. Click **New → New Insight** in the top-right corner.
3. Give your Insight a name and start adding content.

**From a study:**

1. Open the study you want to work with.
2. In the left-hand menu, click **Repository → Insights**.
3. Click **Create Insight** (if none exist) or **New → New Insight**.
4. Name your Insight and begin adding details and embedded artifacts.

## Add content to an Insight

You can enrich Insights with text, media, and research artifacts:

1. **Add a title and description.** Descriptions are optional but recommended for team context.
2. **Add a cover photo.** Click **Add cover photo** and select an image from your device.
3. **Add tags.** Tags aren't automatically inherited from artifacts, apply them manually for easier search and categorization.
4. **Embed artifacts.** Click the **Embed** icon (the sticky-note symbol), search or filter for artifacts, check the box next to each one, and click **Embed**. Embedded artifacts appear within the document, outlined in purple when selected.
5. **Add images.** Click the **Upload image** icon and choose a PNG, JPG, or JPEG. Deselect the image (no purple border) before typing more text.
6. **Add text and formatting.** Use the built-in text editor for headings, bold, italics, lists, and links. Click the **Insert link** (chain) icon to hyperlink text.

<Warning>
  Be careful using delete or backspace near embedded content or a selected image, you can always undo with Ctrl/Cmd + Z or the Undo button.
</Warning>

### Add PDFs

1. Click **New → Upload files** in the top-right corner.
2. Click **Browse files** and select the PDF.
3. After the upload completes, assign the PDF to a study (optional) and add relevant tags.
4. Click **View** to open the PDF, or **Done** if you're all set.

<Note>
  A PDF upload is considered its own Insight, a PDF cannot be added to an existing Insight. PDF Insights can be assigned to interview and unmoderated-test studies, but not Focus Groups. A PDF doesn't need to be assigned to a study at all, it can also live at the account level.
</Note>

## Embed an Insight within an Insight

Embedding an Insight inside another lets you create a central insight board, a space to consolidate related artifacts and view everything in one place without jumping between separate Insights.

1. Create a new Insight that will serve as your insight board.
2. Click the **Embed** icon. You'll see a list of artifacts and Insights you can add — filter by tag, type, or other categories, and embed PDFs, Insights, and additional artifacts. You can add multiple items at once.
3. Once your items are embedded, keep shaping the Insight: update the title, add a description, and apply tags and any other context your team needs.

## Share an Insight

From within the Insight, click the **Copy link** (chain) icon, choose **Public** or **Restricted** visibility, then click **Copy link** and share with teammates.

Admins can change the account-level default by going to **Settings → Permissions → Default Insight sharing** and choosing **Anyone with the link can view**. This sets the visibility default for all new Insights created by your team.

## Delete an Insight

Find the Insight in list or card view, click the **⋯** menu next to it, select **Delete Insight**, and confirm by clicking **Delete Insight** again in the modal. Only Creators and Admins can create or delete Insights.

<Warning>
  This action cannot be undone. If you change your mind before confirming, click **Keep Insight** instead.
