# Tags

> Create, apply, and organize tags across studies, interviews, highlights, reels, and insights.

Tags help you break down long-form interviews and survey responses into bite-sized insights, and they make it easy to identify themes across multiple studies. Applying tags consistently turns a growing pile of research into a searchable, connected library.

## Two types of tags

Great Question uses two kinds of tags. **Global tags** are used organization-wide for cross-study synthesis, while **study tags** are specific to an individual study for focused analysis.

<Note>
  By default, only Admins can create tags. Admins can extend tag-creation permission to Creators from the Tag manager.
</Note>

## Creating global tags

To create global tags, go to **Settings → Candidate Data → [Tags](https://greatquestion.co/tags)** (the **Tag manager**). From there you can add new tags within existing groups, or create new color-coded buckets and drag and drop tags to organize them. You can also merge duplicate tags together or delete tags you no longer need from the same screen.

Studies also have their own **Tags** tab with Study and Global sub-tabs, giving you a second place to manage tags without leaving the study.

## Applying tags

You can apply tags in four places across the Repository:

* Interview Rooms
* Highlights
* Reels
* Insights

In each of these, click **Find or create a tag** and either select an existing tag or create a new one. Great Question can also suggest tags automatically when AI processes a transcript, or while you're highlighting text, you can accept or ignore the suggestion.

<Tip>
  Keep tag names short, clear, and consistent, and use groups to organize by theme, such as Pain Points or Feature Requests, so patterns are easy to spot later.
</Tip>

## Troubleshooting

| Issue              | What's happening                                                                       | How to fix it                                                                                                                    |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Tag not appearing | The tag was created as a study tag rather than a global tag, or filters are hiding it. | Check whether you need a global tag under **Settings → Candidate Data → Tags**, and clear any active filters. |
| Can't create a tag | Your role doesn't have tag-creation permission. | Confirm your role — by default, only Admins can create tags, unless an Admin has extended this to Creators from the Tag manager. |
| Tag not saving | The tag wasn't confirmed before you navigated away. | Press Enter or click to confirm the tag before leaving the page. |
