# Reels

> Compile highlights into curated, shareable collections that tell your research story.

Reels are curated, shareable collections of highlights that form a concise report of your research findings. They're ideal for communicating insights to stakeholders without asking them to scrub through entire interviews. This guide is for Creators and Admins who want to compile highlights into reels, and for Observers who need to watch curated clips.

<Note>
  Reels work best when your highlights are already tagged and named clearly.
</Note>

## Before you start: create highlights

To build a Reel, you'll need **highlights** first.

1. Open an interview or transcript you want to clip.
2. Select the text segment you want to highlight.
3. Click **Save without tags** to create an untagged highlight, or apply a tag to create a tagged highlight.

For more on tagging and highlighting, see [Highlights](/support/support/repository/how-to-use-and-share-higlights) and [Tags](/support/support/repository/managing-tags).

## Create a Reel

You can create Reels in the global Repository or in a study's Repository, the steps are the same. A Reel can hold up to 30 highlights.

**Without highlights preselected:**

1. Click **New → New reel** in the top-right corner.
2. Name your Reel (optionally add a description and tags). If you don't add a title, the Reel saves as "Untitled highlight reel." Once you start adding highlights, you can use AI to generate a title by clicking the stars icon.
3. Optionally narrow the list using **Search for highlights** and the **Filter** button.
4. Select highlights by checking their boxes, checking the box next to the count to select all, or clicking the **＋** on an individual highlight.
5. Click **+ Add to reel** above the highlights list.
6. Click **Save highlight reel** and allow processing time.

**With highlights preselected:**

1. Find highlights via scroll, search, or filters and check their boxes.
2. Click **Add to reel** in the top-right.
3. Choose **Create new reel** or add to an existing Reel.
4. Name your Reel (optionally add a description and tags).
5. Optionally filter further via **Search for highlights** or **Filter**.
6. Add highlights by checking boxes, selecting all, or clicking **＋** per highlight.
7. Click **+ Add to reel**, then **Save highlight reel**, and allow processing.

<Note>
  Every time a Reel's clips change, including adding, removing, or reordering highlights, the whole video is re-rendered from scratch, which is why saving takes a moment. Reels usually process quickly, but large or lengthy highlights may take longer.
</Note>

## Edit a Reel

To **change the title**, click the title in full view or the slide-out, edit it, then click out or press Enter to save.

For everything else, click **Edit highlight reel** (the pencil icon):

* **Description:** update the text, then click **Save highlight reel**.
* **Tags:** use **Find or create a tag** to add study or global tags, then save.
* **Reorder highlights:** drag using the handle, or move one position at a time with the up and down arrows, then save.
* **Add more highlights:** optionally search or filter, select highlights, click **+ Add to reel**, then save.
* **Remove highlights:** click the **✕** on the highlight, then save.

Always click **Save highlight reel** after editing and allow processing to complete before navigating away.

<Note>
  If a highlight's candidate is later deleted, manually or through a data retention rule, that clip is automatically removed from every Reel it was part of, and each affected Reel re-renders on its own. This can make a Reel appear to change with no edits from your team.
</Note>

## Download a Reel

Once a Reel has finished processing, use the **⋯** menu to **Download reel** as an MP4. The option is disabled with a tooltip while the video is still processing.

## Share a Reel

Open the Reel, click **Share** in the top-right, and choose **Public** or **Restricted**, changes save automatically. Click **Copy link** to share, or use the chain-link icon on the Reel card in the Repository.

Admins can set the account default under **Settings → Permissions**, in **Default sharing settings of repository artifacts**: choose **Public** (anyone with the link can view) or **Restricted** (no public link, normal account and study permissions still apply).

## Troubleshooting

| Issue                                                | What's happening                                                                                                  | How to fix it                                                                                                    |
| ---------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Reel looks blank after saving | The Reel is still processing or highlights haven't finished rendering. | Wait a few minutes, then refresh. If it stays blank, confirm your highlights are accessible and contact Support. |
| Can't add more highlights to a Reel | The Reel has reached its 30-highlight limit. | Split the highlights across more than one Reel. |
| Can't add highlights to a Reel | The highlight is from a study you can't access, or you lack edit permissions. | Confirm your role (Creator or Admin) and that the highlight comes from a study you can access. |
| Highlights aren't appearing in search | Filters or tags are too narrow. | Click **Clear filters**, then search again with a broader keyword or tag. |
| Reorder changes not saving | You didn't click **Save highlight reel**, or the save didn't complete. | After reordering, always save and wait for the processing banner to disappear. |
| Can't rename or edit Reel details | You're in read-only mode or lack edit permissions. | Request edit access from the Reel owner or an Admin, or duplicate the Reel. |
| New highlights aren't showing when adding | The highlight list hasn't refreshed. | Reload the page to load the newest highlights. |
| A Reel changed with no edits from anyone on the team | A clip's candidate was deleted (manually or via data retention), which removes that clip and re-renders the Reel. | This is expected behavior — no action needed. |
| Download option is greyed out | The Reel is still processing. | Wait for processing to finish; the option becomes available automatically. |
| Share link not working | The Reel is Restricted, or your org's default visibility is restricted. | Open the Reel, click **Share → Public**, and copy the link again. |
| Reel title shows "Untitled highlight reel" | No title was entered and no AI title was used. | Click the title field, type a name, and press Enter to save. |
