AI‑Moderated Interviews
Learn what AI moderated interviews are, why they matter, and how to set them up in Great Question.

What are AI Moderated Interviews?
AI moderated interviews are interviews led by an AI moderator that adapts in real time based on participant responses.
Unlike rigid chatbots or static surveys, AI moderation:
- Adapts follow‑up questions when answers need more detail
- Probes for clarification, examples, and context
- Captures nuance typically reserved for live moderation
Every session is automatically processed, generating:
- Full video recordings
- Transcripts
- Highlights and key moments
- Insights that flow directly into your repository
Why It Matters
AI moderation helps you scale qualitative research without sacrificing depth.
- More reach: Run many interviews without scheduling live moderators
- More depth: Get richer answers than long‑form survey questions
- Faster insights: Analysis is built‑in and available immediately
- Lower cost: A more affordable alternative to simple moderated interviews
Common Use Cases
The table below highlights common ways teams use AI moderated interviews and when they’re a good fit.
Use case | Description |
Exploratory discovery interviews | Quickly uncover attitudes, needs, and language at scale without scheduling live sessions. |
Simple moderated studies (text-only) | Use AI moderation as a faster, lower-cost alternative to basic live moderated interviews when no stimuli are required. |
Qualitative surveys with long-form answers | Replace static open-text questions with adaptive probing that captures richer context and nuance. |
Early concept or idea validation | Gather in-depth feedback early in the product or design process when speed and scale matter most. |
Supplemental qualitative insight | Add depth alongside surveys or analytics without increasing moderator workload. |

Managing Your Study After Publishing
Once your AI moderated interview is live, there are several areas you may want to configure or monitor before and after inviting participants. These actions fall into three categories: Setup, Execution, and Results.
Setup
These areas help you fine‑tune your study before inviting participants.
Plan
Return to the Plan step anytime to adjust details such as participant limits, incentives, study attributes, segments and more.

Participant Experience
This section explains what participants see and experience when they take part in an AI moderated interview.
Before the Interview Begins
After participants enter their information, they’re shown an introductory screen that explains what to expect before starting the interview. This screen also includes access to Genway’s Terms & Conditions, which participants can review here at any time.

Starting the Interview
When participants click Begin task, they’re taken to a setup screen that includes:
- Who they’ll be interviewing with (the AI moderator)
- Your company logo
- A brief explanation of how Great Question partners with Genway to power the interview
- Options to set preferences before the interview begins
Participants can adjust preferences such as:
- Their preferred language
- The AI interviewer’s voice

Permissions and Recording
Before the interview starts, participants are prompted to enable their camera and microphone. At this time, these permissions are required and cannot be made optional.
Once the interview begins:
- Participants can see that the session is being recorded
- They can mute themselves at any point if needed
- If muted, they’ll see an on-screen message indicating that recording is paused

Ending the Interview
When the interview naturally reaches a stopping point, participants are shown a prompt letting them know the interview feels complete. They can choose to:
- Continue the conversation if they’d like to add more detail, or
- End the interview and complete the task

Troubleshooting AI Moderated Interviews
Issue | What’s Happening | How to Fix It |
Participants can’t start the interview | Participants may not have granted required permissions. | Make sure the Permissions block is included before the AI moderated interview block and that screen, mic, and camera access are required. Ask participants to refresh and re-allow permissions. |
AI moderator feels off-topic or too generic | The AI relies heavily on the context you provide. | Revisit Project objective, Topics, and Who you’re interviewing fields. Add more background, assumptions, and concrete research questions. |
Interview ends too quickly | Interview length may be set too short. | Increase the Interview length in the AI moderator configuration and re-sync with Genway. |
Interview won’t sync or launch | The AI configuration hasn’t been finalized. | Confirm all required fields are filled out, then click Sync with Genway again. If the issue persists, try refreshing the page before publishing. |
No video or transcript appears | Processing may still be in progress or permissions were denied. | Check participant permissions and allow time for processing. Validate expected artifacts (video, transcript, highlights) with product documentation. |
Participants are confused by the AI | Expectations weren’t clearly set. | Update the Welcome block to explain that the interview is AI led, conversational, and time-boxed. |
